Ed Vanyo joined the Grand Forks Fire Department in 1959 and retired as a captain in 2000. One couple who remembered was Ed and Peggy Vanyo. “There’s still a lot of people alive in Grand Forks who know this fire truck.” “There’s a lot of history there,” Walding told the Herald in 2013. He reached out to the Herald about its restoration, six years ago. After changing hands a few times, the truck wound up in California, where it was purchased by Gary Walding, of League City, Texas, a collector of old cars and fire trucks. The truck was retired from service in 1966 and sold at an auction for $800 to William “Bill” Cox, of Grand Forks. It was purchased new by the Grand Forks Fire Department for around $10,000. The fire truck is a 1928 American LaFrance 1,000 gallon-per-minute truck, with right-hand drive.
